This study investigates the influence of emotional stress on rheumatoid arthritis . The emotional stress is indicated by death of a significant person in the individual's life, family worry or economic worry. It is an individual thesis written as one part of a group study of patients at a general hospital, undertaken by the 1965 Class of the Maritime School of Social Work . The records of patients admitted to the Victoria General Hospital between January 1 and December 31, 1963 were the source of data; information pertinent to the concern of all members of the group being taken off on a common schedul3. Data relevant to this individual thesis were then axtracbed and statistical tests of significance (chi-square) carried out . It was found that there is no significant relationship between emotional stress as indicated by the three factors studied. This is contrary to much of the research done by others on this topic. Examination was made of why this study did not support the hypothesis and recommendations have been made as to how this study could be carried out more effectively.
