This thesis is an historical evaluation of the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Colored People. As background, the thesis includes an historical review of the social conditions of the Refugee Blacks from 1812 - 1945, with emphasis on the general economic status of the Black race by 1945. The study contains an in-depth assessment of the organizational structure of the NSAACP and the role the Association has played in the area of employment. A sample of twenty individuals were interviewed, chosen because it was felt they could provide a general evaluation of the Association. The sample comprised people of both races, varying in ages from 26 to 69 years, thirteen of whom are members of the Association. The results are included in Chapter IV dealing with the evaluation of the organization. It was found that during the first 14 or 15 years the Association played an important role in the Black communities. Its programs were geared to meeting the basic needs of Black people, and they succeeded in getting the people involved in trying to ameliorate their social conditions. It appears that the Association has become less community oriented, and the general feeling of the respondents was, the Association is not actively involved in trying to improve the socio-economic status of Black people.
