This thesis on the atonement proposes that Jesus’ God-forsakenness is a descent into the situation of sin, for the purpose of recreating and perfecting the human will in triumph over sin. It is arrived at in a conversation, carried out within the dynamic theological framework Moltmann has built upon Jesus’ cry of God-forsakenness. After exploring Moltmann, Hebrews 5:7-10’s atonement explanation is brought into the conversation to both be interpreted through Moltmann’s theological lens and to offer correction to that lens. A Hegelian focus on finitude and non-being as the problem atonement seeks to solve is identified in Moltmann, at the expense of sin, the primary problem identified by Hebrews. An excision of this aspect of Moltmann’s theology is suggested with a replacement by Irenaeus’ recapitulation, which complements both Moltmann and Hebrews. The result is a fusion of God-forsakenness and recapitulation/perfection. This image of the atonement could be described as substitutionary recapitulation.
