Lez talk about sex: a critical discourse analysis of the "How to/lesbian sex 101" video type on Youtube

This thesis examines videos on the social media platform YouTube on LGBTQ+* sexual education. The videos in this study can be categorized in the "how to/lesbian sex 101" video type. The videos in the dataset (n=5) were analyzed based on their compositional organization, and on similarities and differences in the discourse created by content in this video type. Rooted in queer theory and critical discourse analysis, this study found that the "how to/lesbian sex 101" video type attempts to provide sexual education information that is typically unavailable in mainstream media or schools; the videos attempt to normalize the sexual diversity of lesbian sex. It was also found that through this normalization, the videos employ certain elements of "homonormativity" that exclude other diversities in sexuality and gender identity. There is a tension in the discourse of the videos. While attempting to normalize sexual diversity, they regularly do so by employing heteronormative codes of the mainstream discourse regarding sexual diversity and sexual education.
