Abstract
Released in the winter of 2014, the report entitled Now or Never: An Urgent Call to Action for Nova Scotians, or commonly "The Ivany Report," has been instrumental in public discussion of the future of Nova Scotia. I present a critical discourse analysis of this report, rooted in the standpoint of the working class of Nova Scotia. I investigate the role the crisis narrative plays in the report, and the 'now or never' approach taken by the Ivany Commission. I argue that the report serves three main functions: the maintenance of the hegemony of the dominant economic class in this province, the implementation of
certain neoliberal policies, and the downloading of political and economic responsibility onto the working class. The report
coopts traditional notions of solidarity and culture to create the spontaneous consent of the working class for a projet national of increased economic growth.
