How attachment style predicts incivility, civility, and cohesion in the workplace

Incivility, civility and workgroup cohesion have been identified as important workplace constructs. However, little research has addressed individual perceptions of these constructs. In recent I/O research attachment theory has been used to conceptualize workplace relationships. The present study aimed to identify relationships between attachment style, incivility, civility, and workgroup cohesion. It was hypothesized that increased attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance would each significantly and uniquely predict increased perceptions of incivility and decreased perceptions of civility and workgroup cohesion. A survey of health care workers (N=1011) was conducted by the Centre for Organizational Research and Development. Results indicate both attachment orientations are significant and unique predictors of all study variables. These findings have implications for employees and employers alike. Considerations for future research are also discussed.
