Prior learning and acquisition of novel discriminations

Two experiments assessed the prediction that pretraining with a configural or elemental discrimination would influence learning rates of novel configural discriminations. Participants first acquired either a configural or an elemental discrimination, and were then presented with a negative patterning or biconditional discrimination. In both experiments, the negative patterning discrimination was learned faster than the biconditional discrimination. However, pretraining had little influence on the acquisition of these discriminations .
