Exploring the behaviours of young children with autism spectrum disorder in a motor development program

The purpose of this study was to explore behaviours and motor skills through the use of a sensory motor program for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Over an eight-week time period, participants were observed of their participation in the Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience (S.M.I.L.E.), a motor development program. Semi-structured interviews were used to gain insight into parents’/guardians’ and instructors’ perspectives on each participant with themes including: (a) behaviours; (b) motor skills; (c) program progression; and (d) likes/dislikes. Finally, information was gathered from history records through the S.M.I.L.E. program. It was found that children with ASD experience delays in motor development and demonstrate behaviours that prevent them from achieving a successful experience. These results indicate that children with ASD would benefit from designated quiet spaces with limited distractions that promote choice, exploration, and success.
