REBIC analysis of charge density waves in TaS3

As a quasi one-dimensional material, TaS3 undergoes a phase transition in its structure when the temperature is decreased below its critical Peierls temperature. This phase transition is known as a charge density wave and its properties can be studied using electron beam induced current in a scanning electron microscope. The regions observed within the crystal vary in contrast at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures implying a non-CDW behaviour. The results of this experiment suggest that there is a possibility that electrically active defects are the source of the contrast changes in the EBIC image of TaS3 and further research studies are recommended to obtain quantitative results.
