Physical activity is pertinent to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially in children. Some of the benefits of physical activity include: improved body composition; decreased blood pressure; improved blood glucose regulation; and many more. There are increases in Body Mass Index (BMI) levels of children from a lower socioeconomic status (SES) that may be the result of decreased physical activity levels. In addition, children of lower SES are predicted to take part in different physical activities than those from a higher SES. Some of the types of physical activities in association with lower SES in adults are: basketball, home exercise equipment, weightlifting, softball, and walking. Currently there is a lack of research regarding the association of SES with the types of physical activities in which children of a lower income group are participating. This thesis will determine the relationships between physical activity, family income, and (BMI) in children and youth of grades 3, 7, and 11. This research could enlighten government and health promotion agencies to develop programs suited to that particular population of children and potentially decrease rates of inactivity.
