The subject of closeness in coach-athlete relationships is an important subject within the realm of coaching, particularly when dealing with female athletes. In order for both coach and athlete to gain success and satisfaction surrounding sport, the dyad must create a satisfactory relationship. When creating these relationships, coaches must be aware of the differences between coaching males and coaching females. Grounded theory was used to qualitatively research the methods that CIS women’s volleyball coaches use when developing and maintaining close relationships with their athletes. The results found that creating and maintaining open lines of communication is an essential part of developing a close coach-athlete relationship. It was found that this is particularly important when coaching female athletes. The results also indicated that to have a successful relationship, a coach should relate to their players both as athletes, and as people. Further research should be done in the area of coach and female athlete relationships to closely examine the methods by which closeness is obtained.
