In this collection of thirty-six poems organized around the months of the year, I explore my place as a modern peasant tied to the land of Nova Scotia and the Annapolis Valley in particular. This is investigated using the traditional theme of the Labours of the Months as expressed in art and artefacts, particularly through a collection of lithographs by Alex Colville, as well as through reflection on my own past and present experience. Various forms of poetry are employed including free verse, ekphrasis, concrete poems, haiku, and the sonnet. The influence of mechanization on agriculture and the significant impact of war on this region and in my own life are explored. Throughout the collection there is an arc that moves from the darkness and menace that life contains, to the expression of hope in the intentional act of striving to create meaning from the routine experiences of daily life.
