Abstract: One in three American women knows how to knit. Knitting has been around for hundreds of years, and has been a valuable part of many women‟s lives throughout history. For such a prevalent part of women‟s social history there has been very little research conducted on the subject. This thesis seeks to explain why knitting has experienced dips and resurgences in both female and male participation rates over the past fifty years. Using a detailed literature analysis and several theoretical perspectives, insight is provided into the reasons men and women choose to knit or to not knit.
