Abstract

A priming task and event- related brain potentials ( ERPs) were used to investigate the orthographic influence on spoken word recognition as participants ( N = 18) completed a rhyme judgment task. Primes and targets shared phonology and orthography ( P+ O+; floss-gloss), shared phonology but not orthography ( P+ O-; sauce- gloss), shared orthography but not phonology ( P- O+; gross- gloss) or shared neither phonology nor orthography ( P- O-; calf-gloss). Results showed a phonological priming effect as the N400, an ERP response associated with language processing, was attenuated for rhyming compared to non- rhyming conditions. There was a marginal orthographic priming effect as there was a decrease in N400 amplitude in the P- O+ condition compared to the P- O- condition. The late positive complex ( LPC) showed evidence of a phonological priming effect. Results provide partial evidence that orthography is activated along with phonology during speech processing.
