Objectives: Due to the large numbers of energy drinks and their growing popularity in the sports world, the objective of this project was to determine if the energy drink Red Bull ® had any effect on the performance of varsity hockey players. Specifically, this project evaluated the delayed effects of the energy drink, approximately two hours post- consumption. Research Design and Methods: A total of twenty varsity hockey players from the Acadia University hockey team participated in this placebo controlled cross- over design study. The study took place over two days separated by forty eight hours consisting of the Reed Repeat Skate test, the ranked scrimmage of the participants by professional coaches, the Bosco jump test, and the post- testing questionnaire. Results: In this study, no significance was found for the tests that were conducted. A trend was discovered as the coaches ranked players who were regular users of Red Bull ® higher ( i. e. performing better) while they were on Red Bull ® compared to those who were not regular users. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that consuming Red Bull ® would neither hinder nor improve the performance of the twenty participants.
