Abstract

The present study was an exploratory investigation of different factors associated with young females’ decisions to receive the HPV vaccine, Gardasil ® or not in a sample of Acadia University students. Although no formal hypotheses were made, several expectations based on previous literature were made and supported. Results indicated that relative to those who were not inoculated ( N= 61), those females who received ( N= 41) the vaccine: were more likely to have spoken with their doctor, had support from their families, had fewer concerns about the vaccine and were more knowledgeable about the vaccine and HPV and reported greater decision satisfaction. Those individuals who planned to get vaccinated but had not yet ( N= 29) were found to be consistently in between the two other groups on most factors.
