Three theoretical positions are crucial in thoroughly understanding how bottled water has become an incredibly successful and profitable industry in North America. Enclosure of the Commons demonstrates how corporations have physically accessed community water sources and justified seizure with discourse of pro- privatization theory. Social governance explores the willingness of citizens to purchase a market commodity in order to remedy social, political and environmental problems created by global capitalism. Commodity fetishism dissects consumer perception and behaviour in order to highlight how geographical distance and the complexity of production chains have destroyed a consumer‟ s ability to make informed consumption decisions. Finally, the integral role of the state in facilitating corporate expansion into the provision of essential services, on a for- profit basis, will summarize the multitude of struggles against global capitalism symbolized within a seemingly benign commodity.
