Abstract

Previous research has found relationships between attachment, coping and psychological well- being, however the patterns observed in adolescents and adults have not been compared. Additionally, little research has examined attachment as a moderator of the effects of coping on psychological well- being. One hundred and eighteen adolescents ( ages 17 to 19) who were undergraduate students and 296 adults ( ages 21 to 60) completed questionnaires assessing attachment styles, general coping techniques, and levels of depression and anxiety. Overall trends showed that adult attachment more consistently predicted coping techniques and psychological well- being than adolescent attachment. Additionally, adolescent methods of coping showed little relationship to psychological well- being, whereas adult coping showed significant relationships with psychological well- being. In adults, attachment anxiety moderated the effect of emotional support- seeking coping on psychological well- being.
