This thesis examines why and how the Mi‟kmaq Warrior Society, an Indigenous social movement whose members belong to the Mi‟kmaq Nation, confronted its opponents during the three engagements analyzed here, and what this Indigenous social movement accomplished by confronting its opponents. In order to analyze the nature of this contemporary Indigenous social movement, this thesis employed a hybrid of two different analytical frameworks, Eyerman and Jamison‟s “cognitive praxis” framework and Marx‟s “mode of production” framework. The findings from this analysis demonstrated that the Mi‟kmaq Warrior Society mobilized because the Mi‟kmaq Nation is and has been historically denied rights to instruments of production, such as land and water, which are so vital to the Nation‟s cultural, social, and political health. Understanding the history of the Mi‟kmaq Nation is, therefore, essential in order to understand the nature of the Mi‟kmaq Warrior Society and what this Indigenous social movement accomplished.
