The treatment means of interest in some one-way layouts are ordered in a natural way and it is desired to compare adjacent pairs of means. For example, the treatments may be a sequence of increasing dosages of a drug. An experimenter may want to look directly at only the successive differences between the treatment effects in order to assess how the treatment effect changes with increasing dose levels. However, the assumption of equal variances is often unjustified. In this thesis a one-sided comparison of means of adjacent ordered treatments in one-way layouts under heteroscedasicity is proposed by a single-stage and a two-stage procedure, respectively. Relation between the one-stage and the two-stage procedure is discussed. Critical value tables are also included for this new procedure. A numerical example is also included to illustrate how to implement the new procedure.
