The Pain Response Questionnaire (PRQ) was created to assess a broad range of preferences regarding the forms of support received from significant others while experiencing pain. It is based upon research by Newton-John and Williams (2006) which found that spouses of pain patients respond to pain in ways that established measures do not assess. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PRQ. The PRQ was administered to a large university student sample in Study 1. Data from this sample were used to conduct a factor analysis to create empirically based scales for the PRQ. Four scales were created, resulting in a revised version of the measure (PRQ-R). In Study 2, correlations between the PRQ-R and its scales and several theoretically related measures and scales were examined. These results were largely supportive of the validity of the PRQ and support its further investigation.
