The goal of this project is to analyze the values and culture of the Québécois people through the music of Les Cowboys Fringants. This group uses a style of music called néo-trad, which is a combination of contemporary rock and the traditional Québécois chansonnier. This musical style looks to identify with youth while also staying true to the vision of the Quiet Revolution and the 1970s sovereignist movement. The group describes many aspects and values of Québécois culture from friends and family, the environment, politics, the economy and historical events which influence their society today. A selection of songs are discussed in detail, each providing an example of an important aspect of the Québécois way of life from love to the estrangement from the rest of Canada as a result of language barriers. In addition, the music discussed is an important part of Québécois society as it is only fully available to those who understand not only Québécois values, but also the unique language that has developed since the British conquered the French 300 years ago.
