The purpose of this investigation was to gather both qualitative and quantitative data regarding the methods currently used by caregivers to fold and unfold a lightweight manual wheelchair for children. Seven caregivers were recruited from Acadia University's Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience (SMILE) program to participate in this study. Participants were asked to demonstrate their usual folding and unfolding methods using a standard lightweight manual wheelchair, cross-brace design. As outcome measures, a questionnaire, a visual analogue scales of perceived exertion and back strain, and Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) back scores were used. The study found that the methods used by caregivers while folding / unfolding a wheelchair were associated with awkward, non-neutral trunk postures in extreme positions or at extreme angles. As such, all participants were scored with an OWAS score of 2 of higher. These results underscore the need to ensure that proper methods are used to reduce the likelihood for low back injuries and/or strain. The fact that primary caregivers used improper biomechanics to fold / unfold a manual wheelchair up to two-three times a day warrants concern. The results of this study suggest the need for formal education on recommended methods appropriate for the caregiver's personal biomechanics and anthropometries.
