An experimental polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy setup was developed and built for studying the characteristics of benzotriazole and other corrosion inhibitors at metal surfaces as a function of electrode potential and pH. A thin film of imidazole was detected at a Au (111) single crystal electrode surface using this setup, demonstrating its capability for application for quantitative analysis. The isotropic optical constants for benzotriazole, imidazole and benzimidazole were determined for several spectral regions of interest. These regions were chosen based on the presence of strongly absorbing bands which could be related to transition dipoles and consequently to the molecular geometry of these soluble surfactants. The absorption bands measured agree well with literature spectra and band assignments.
