Physical education is extremely important because the majority of Canadians are inactive and it has been shown that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to many different health problems. For this reason, we should be extremely concerned with the fact that there is a significant decline in high school physical education participation once it becomes an elective. A great deal of research has been conducted on the quality of physical education classes at the secondary school level and this research has identified many physical education issues that need to be addressed. In order to gain insight into the behaviours that physical education teachers should abstain from or emulate, many researchers have studied students’ perceptions of their teacher’s treatment. Among other things, this research has identified that students’ perceptions and interpretations of their teacher’s behaviour can have a major impact on their conduct and performance in physical education class. One of the main reasons for conducting research on physical education classes is so that teachers can develop a more inclusive practice that meets the needs of all of their students. The present study examined how students interpret the positive teaching behaviours directed toward them. A questionnaire was used to collect the data for this study; the subjects were forty-three students in grades 7, 8, and 9. The results indicated that the students perceived that they were being given an opportunity to learn within a positive teaching climate. In addition, most of the students gave their teacher credit for her actions that made them feel comfortable, accepted, satisfied, challenged, and competent in physical education class. This study also provided relevant information on the perceived impact of positive teaching behaviours’ on student cooperation, performance, and effort.
