Uneasy Crossing is a novella covering the final transatlantic crossing of the S.S. Atlantic from the perspective of a woman. The Atlantic was a real shipwreck that occurred April 1, 1873 off Nova Scotia: a White Star Liner ran into the coast, resulting in a huge loss of life. No woman survived the shipwreck, therefore no historical record survives of a woman’s experience. Character Selina Mossman, who has recently graduated from medical school, relates her experience through a past and present narration that changes back and forth from the journey aboard the ship and the ensuing shipwreck. She also represents a feminist perspective, as she is part of the first wave of women who decide to challenge the status quo of having a profession in medicine.
