Zooplankton composition and abundance were examined in relation to shoreline configuration around the Scotian Shelf. During the summer of 2004, major bays and estuaries were sampled to investigate the effects of size, depth, geographic distances and salinity on these populations. Six samples were taken in bays to ensure spatial coverage, while stations in estuaries were selected based on five parts per thousand increments in salinity. Results showed that composition and abundance were related to depth in bays, while estuarine populations were a function of salinity. Community structure did not differ with geographic location, with the exception of the Minas Basin. This study shows that zooplankton composition and abundance is homogeneous around the Shelf, and that populations in bays and estuaries can be partially explained by physical parameters such as depth and salinity. Further investigation is necessary to identify other factors that play an integral role in regulating these populations and the possibility of discovering distinctive areas. By understanding the physical processes that influence the biogeographical differences in zooplankton populations, a foundation can be created for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas around the Scotian Shelf.
