The current study explored the main component of burnout and a form of workplace mistreatment. The goal of the study was to gain a better understanding of exhaustion and incivility at work through daily reports. Levels of exhaustion, experienced incivility, and instigated incivility were collected from healthcare employees at correctional facilities across Connecticut who completed a brief daily diary twice a day for fourteen consecutive days. Multiple hierarchical regressions revealed that within a work day exhaustion levels before a work shift were a significant predictor of exhaustion levels after a work shift. Results of between work day analyses also revealed many significant relationships among exhaustion, experienced incivility, and instigated incivility. The intricate pattern of the relationships between the variables resulted in longitudinal sequences with corresponding feedback loops that create a nomological net of negative workplace experiences. These sequences have important implications for future research and new directions for workplace interventions.
