The Herbert River Limestone, a C subzone member of the Mississippian Windsor Group, is a sequence of variably silty, variably fossiliferous lithologic units comprising micrites, sparites and minor silts. It represents a transgressive-regressive cycle of marine deposition in environments ranging from intertidal to sublittoral below wave base. As well as being faunally and lithologically distinct from other Windsor Group limestones, the Herbert River Limestone Member also appears to be chemically distinct. The chemistry of the limestone appears to be controlled -by a number of factors including basin geom-etry, environment of deposition, local source areas a n d chemical dolomitization. Most of the elements considered in this thesis,including calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, strontium and insoluble residue, exhibit systematic patterns that can be related to one or more of the previously mentioned controlling factors. The heavy metals, copper, lead and zinc, tend to be erratic in their occurrence, appearing to vary independently of the other components of the limestone and also independently of the factors that are seen as controlling the occurrence of most of the analyzed components.
