The current study explored the effects of five proposed moderator variables (general resources, control, community, reward, and values) on the relationship of workload manageability with exhaustion, a principal dimension of burnout. Moderating effects were examined in two groups of healthcare workers, staff and first line managers. Significant moderation effects were found in the staff sample for the variables of general resources, control, reward, and values. Moderators were found to significantly weaken the negative association existing between workload manageability and levels of exhaustion, meaning that those with high levels of workload manageability and high levels of any of the four significant moderator variables demonstrated the lowest levels of exhaustion. Significant moderation effects were not noted in the first line manager analyses, likely due to a much smaller sample size. The results of this study may serve to inform future workplace interventions aimed at reducing levels of exhaustion, and by extension, burnout, amongst employees.
