This study investigates the relationship between dating patterns and illegitimacy by comparing the dating patterns of the adolescent unmarried mother with those experienced by the married mother prior to her marriage. It is an individual thesis under-taken in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Master's Degree in Social Work at the Maritime School of Social Work. A questionnaire, distributed to 29 unmarried and 15 married mothers at the Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax, from October 13, 1967, to December 1, 1967, was the source of data. These data were analyzed and statistical tests of significance (chi-square) were carried out. It was found there were no significant similarities in the dating patterns of the adolescent unmarried mother and those experienced by the young married mother when she, too, was an unmarried adolescent. It was concluded that the limitations of the study design had a bearing on the outcome of the study, and recommendations were given for further research.
