This thesis is based on the study of 31 wards in the care of the Director of Child Welfare for the Province of Nova Scotia as of December 31, 1966. Data were collected from the case records at the Halifax Regional Office of the Department of Public Welfare of the Province of Nova Scotia. This thesis is concerned with determining whether there is a difference between the proportion of emotionally disturbed wards who have experienced an unstable environment and the proportion of ·well-adjusted wards who have experienced an unstable environment. It was found that a significantly greater proportion of emotionally disturbed wards experienced an unstable environment than did well-adjusted wards. It was concluded that the findings of this study have shown sufficient potential to warrant further research on a wider scale.
