Because they left few written documents, little has been known about the first English-speaking immigrants who settled in Horton Township between 1760 and 1820. Local histories showed that most of these immigrants remained, established themselves on farms and raised families who generally followed the same cycle. More than 200 years later, many of the buildings constructed by these settlers are in use. These previously inarticulate people reveal themselves and their culture through their buildings. The houses built between 1760-1820 were analyzed and compared with traditional Connecticut architecture and contemporary changes in architectural styles. Through the study a new style of architecture, the Horton-Yankee style, evolves and three significant designs emerge. Such developments reveal that this dynamic society welcomed change and innovation and adapted them to the new environment. The Horton-Yankee style is a visual demonstration of the fragmentation of the society which enhanced the significance of individualism among the people.
