This is an ethnography of Black Rock, a community situated on the Bay of Fundy coast in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. This study focuses on the role of social capital in the rural community. The researcher was a member of this community and therefore conducted the study as a native researcher. Various methods were used to collect the data including: fieldwork, semi-structured interviews, archival work and participant observation. Theoretical approaches used include grounded theory, as well as concepts of community from Durkheim, Weber, Tönnies, Cohen. This investigation resulted in a clear depiction of the community’s history. Events and attitudes which caused past turmoil were found to be affecting the social capital of the community in present day. Social capital was identified as a driving force behind the community’s ability to persevere through the challenges it has faced and methods for maintaining and strengthen social capital were identified.
