The purpose of the current study is to determine the appropriateness and feasibility of implementing the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy (CAPL) protocol in children with disabilities. CAPL has previously only been validated for typically developing children. Both qualitative and descriptive quantitative analyses were used to assess barriers and trends of using this protocol to assess fundamental movement skills (FMS) of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Down syndrome (DS). The results found will be use d to make adjustments to the Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership Experience (S.M.I.L.E.) programming at Acadia University to ensure that all individuals are provided with the opportunity for physical literacy success. Themes that emerged from the data coincided with previous literature of Staples et al., (2006). Specifically highlighted was the importance of a person-centered approach, multi-faceted motor behavior, context, choice and autonomy, program adaptation, and reflective practice in an adapted physical activity setting. Researchers discovered the importance of encouragement, positive reinforcement, and video-recordings to help foster a positive learning environment. The information provided by this study is beneficial is determining the appropriateness of physical literacy assessment tools on children with disabilities.
