The study that follows is an exploration and analysis of the development of community orientation among a small group of University students from a perspective that traces its origin as an institutionalisation of a social movement. The first section of the work is devoted to consideration of the topic and culminates in the development of an Operant Model for understanding the intrasystemic dynamics of a vertical relationship of social movement to community. Subsequent sections focus upon particular processes in the overall history of Willett House, a residence at Acadia University. Chapter Two focuses upon the social bases of conflict in the process of pre-social movement from September 1975 to April of 1978. Chapter Three explores the process of social movement from September 1978 to April 1979. Chapter Four carries this discussion into the period from September to December, 1979, exploring transcendence of conflict as a process of orientation to community. The final section, Chapter Five, is devoted to a summary of the period from September 1975 to December 1979, and offers a series of alternative "future directions" as a concluding discussion.
