Anne of the imaginative space: fan activities as textual negotiation of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne narrative

This thesis examines the significance of Anne’s daydreaming as a productive negotiation between reality and the imagination in L.M. Montgomery’s Anne series, especially through its expanded, continually adapted series format. Particularly, Anne’s daydreaming is established as an imaginative mental space that facilitates this negotiation. Just as Anne’s imaginative space leads audiences to generate imaginative possibilities within the constraints of their individual realities, some audiences engage with the Anne narrative through web fan activities. Tracing these activities through the spaces that the novels and adaptations create, this thesis demonstrates how Anne, as a character, acts as a role model in negotiating identity, and how many of these activities help fan creators negotiate between the imaginative ideals of the Anne narrative and their own realities, thus helping them in developing their mature identities.
