Petrographic examination of samples from the North Branch Baddeck River Leucotonalite and its mafic dykes indicates the leucotonalite has undergone greenschist-facies metamorphism as the result of Late Silurian to Early Devonian deformation and movement along the Eastern Highlands Shear zone. Results from whole rock geochemical analysis of the leucotonalite and the mafic dykes were plotted on tectonic discrimination diagrams and compared with other units in the Cape Breton Highlands. The leucotonalite appears to have formed in a volcanic-arc setting and may be part of the Aspy terrane or represent basement to either the Aspy or Bras d'Or terranes. The mafic dykes represent two distinct suites of rocks. One suite is unrnetamorphosed and displays mid-ocean ridge affinity. This suite is geochemically similar to the Faribault Brook metavolcanic unit of the Jumping Brook Metamorphic Suite. The other suite has reached upper greenschist-to amphibolite-facies metamorphism and displays volcanic-arc basalt character. This suite is geochemically similar to the Money Point Group and the volcanic rocks of the Mabou Highlands.
