This study examines how a teacher understands the abilities of a student with Asperger's Syndrome and resulting challenges that affect teaching practice. The purpose is to gain an understanding of the relationships between perceived student ability, teacher background and philosophy, and how they together translate into teaching practice. An examination of school, student, and teacher backgrounds provides the context in which an examination of teacher perceptions and practices takes place. Relevant literature provides a framework to report the findings with relation to common characteristics found in many individuals with Asperger's Syndrome and possible teaching strategies suggested. Through the examination of the data, recurring themes are noted. Six key challenges for educators of students with Asperger's Syndrome are discussed. Implications for teaching practice and future research are provided.
