The current study examined the association between adult attachment styles and the way in which one encourages one’s relationship partner to cope with stress. Additionally, the association between the coping strategy one partner encourages the other partner to use, and the stressed partner’s psychological and relational well-being, was examined. Couples (N = 199) completed an online survey, evaluating coping strategies encouraged, as well as measures of attachment, and relational and psychological well-being. Analyses were conducted using a statistical macro for SPSS called Process (Hayes, 2012), which allowed for path analyses of both moderation and mediation models, as well as combinations of these two models. Although there was little evidence of mediation or moderated mediation, results suggested that the type of support encouraged was associated with the support giver’s attachment style, and the type of coping encouraged by the support giver was associated with the support seeker’s psychological and relational well-being.
