Men who abuse: examining emotional literacy in men's stories

The fields of emotional intelligence and emotional literacy have popularized over the last decade. While emotional intelligence theories have been applied to education, the workplace and mental health, the area of domestic violence has been under-explored. A narrative approach is used to question men about their experiences of being abusive and their experiences of emotions within their relationships in order to gain insight about the role of emotional literacy in helping men move away from abuse. The current study follows Steiner's five principles of emotional literacy to examine four men's narratives of being abusive in relationships. Findings provide significant information for researchers in the fields of domestic violence and emotional literacy as well as for counsellors, the men's partners, and men who want to change their abusive behaviour.
