Common Object Request Broker Architecture, CORBA is an architecture that provides platform, language, and location transparency thereby supporting distributed heterogeneous systems. It also provides a number of services such as Naming, Trading, Notifying. Recently, many vendors started to add implementations of various services to the basic implementation of CORBA. This thesis describes the design and implementation of a distributed dynamically configurable system, called Research Topic Finder (RTF), which uses the following three CORBA Services: Naming, Trading and Notification. RTF can be used to search for research topics advertised by faculty members. It can also be used for setting up notifications for registered listeners who use different networked computers. Since Sun Microsystems has recently added various Java services, this thesis also provides a brief comparison of CORBA Services and corresponding Java services.
