The present study used eye tracking to assess the degree to which orthography influences spoken word recognition (SWR) in the context of an implicit measure of orthographic processing. Participants were presented with four images surrounding a fixation cross. The duration of fixation on the target image was measured in each of the four competitor sets: the full competitor set (i.e., TRRU) consisting of a target image (e.g. ball), an image matching in phonology and orthography (e.g., wall), an image matching in phonology but not orthography (e.g., doll), and an unrelated image ( e.g., fox); a matching orthography competitor set (i.e., TRUU) consisting of a target image, an image matching in phonology and orthography, and two unrelated images ; a mismatching orthography competitor set (i.e., TURU); consisting of a target image, an image matching in phonology but not orthography and two unrelated images;and an unrelated set (i.e., TUUU) consisting of a target image and three unrelated images. While none of the effects reached significance, the trends in the data indicate that participants showed an increased proportion of fixations to the target in the TRRU and TRUU conditions, and the least in the TURU and TUUU conditions. Further analyses of fixation in the full competitor set suggest there was no rhyme competition, which conflicts with past research. Future research should address possible reasons as to why the results conflicted with expectations such as the timing of the delay between visual presentation and auditory word onset, and whether or not participants were naïve to the task expectations.
