The goal of this project is to determine if the Wolfville Farmer’s Market is a space of what Hannah Arendt calls, “political action.” In order to answer the research question this thesis uses a combination of a theoretical analysis and a case study. In the theoretical analysis Arendt’s theory of action is explained and four main components of action are identified : it creates something new, it involves plurality, it involves distinctness of individuals, and it is also an event. Then a case study of the Wolfville Farmer’s Market is explored to investigate and assess Arendt’s definition of action and in turn her concept of action will evaluate if the Wolfville Farmer’s Market should be considered a space of action. A mixed method approach that combines surveys and interviews is used in the case study to collect data on how people who work at the market and people visit the market see the market as a space of action. To conclude the data is measured against Arendt’s definition of action in order to evaluate the Wolfville Farmer’s Market as a space of political action.
