Sequence and characteristics of DVNP (Dinoflagellate Viral Nucleoprotein) in oxyrrhis marina.

Dinoflagellates, unlike other eukaryotes, do not appear to use histones as the irmain DNA structural proteins. Instead, they use Dinoflagellate Viral Nucleoproteins (DVNP), an as-of-yet largely uncharacterized protein group. In the model organism Oxyrrhis marina, a basal dinoflagellate, there are 6 types of DVNP when grouped by sequence similarity. Using PCR and E. coli transformation, we cloned a representative sequence for each of the six groups of DVNP. These sequences were then used to express the proteins in E. coli. With these available proteins, further research can be done on the properties of DVNP and how DVNP differs from histones. Furthermore, understanding the properties of DVNP may lead to a better understanding of the evolutionary history of dinoflagellates.
