Being a mentor can mean different things to different people. At first sight, a mentor appears to be simply a person who willingly and passionately shares his or her wisdom, insight and experience with someone who is less experienced. Given the complexity of a minister’s task, mentoring a student of ministry is a difficult assignment in its own right. Therefore, the thesis asks: What is the role of the mentor in the Mentored Ministry Programme of Acadia Divinity College? Beginning with a study of the role of the minister from biblical, theological and traditional points of view, Clearly Mentoring then examines the subject of mentoring through various lenses and mentoring elements contained in the literature. A qualitative research consisting of interviews with supervisors and students who were involved in the Supervised Field Education at Acadia Divinity College is reviewed and analysed. This research, a snapshot in time, is compared with the literature reviewed, revealing the health of the Supervised Field Education experience. All these elements are joined together, leading the author to recommend a way forward for the new Mentored Ministry Programme of Acadia Divinity College. A clear role for mentors is given. Potvin then goes on to recommend a way forward, towards training and certification of mentors in order to enhance and standardise the mentoring experience.
