Annie Marion MacLean, a native of Prince Edward Island, belonged to the first generation of college-educated women and was an active reformer in the American Progressive movement of the early twentieth century. MacLean graduated with her B.A. and M.A. from Acadia College in 1893 and 1895, respectively, and then received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1900. She is the first woman from Canada to receive a Ph.D. in Sociology. She published seven books and some twenty articles. Her gender was a determining factor in her pursuit of a career in social reform. Her areas of focus included working women, immigration, education and the poor living conditions in the American city. This thesis argues that MacLean's social philosophy and accomplishments in the United States reflected the liberal education that she received in the Maritimes. Motivated by Christian idealism, her early education fostered the development of MacLean's maternal feminism, ethnocentricity and liberal progressivism.
