Abstract

Exploring the various power relations between the Round Table knights in La Morte Darthur, by Sir Thomas Malory, reveals both the power and the vulnerabilities of chivalry, which often forces the knights to choose a course of action that, while on the one hand fulfills part of the Pentecostal Oath, also causes him to break the oath he has sworn to uphold. The knights are caught in a paradoxical tragedy of ideology, where private human desires clash with the public duties and ambitions, As the complexities of court life evolve, so too must the knight evolve to secure the safety of Camelot and safeguard Arthur. Ultimately, it is up to the knight-king Arthur to maintain law and order based on his ability to lead his knights. Arthur does not escape the paradox of knighthood, which leads to the greatest tragedy of all, his death and the end of Camelot.
