Two studies were conducted that assessed the role of numeracy and reading comprehension in nutrition label comprehension (NLC). Numeracy was correlated with NLC in both studies. However, reading comprehension was not correlated with NLC when it was assessed with a subjective measure in Study 1, but was correlated when assessed with an objective measure in Study 2. Based on the results from Study 1, nutrition knowledge, country of origin and cognitive reflection were added in Study 2. Nutrition knowledge and cognitive reflection were both correlated with NLC. Next, two regression analyses were conducted to assess which variables might be predictive of nutrition label comprehension. Results from the regression analyses revealed that numeracy skills, reading comprehension abilities, and nutrition knowledge all contribute to an individuals’ nutrition label comprehension.
