This thesis takes a close look at sex tourism in the Dominican Republic and the underlying national and individual factors which contribute to its existence. Feminist theories and theories of sex work provide a basis for understanding information gathered from women sex workers interviewed in the field. Research about life in the Dominican Republic is related directly to the researcher‟s experiences in the country, including interview responses from seven current and former female sex workers from Sosua and a local worker with an NGO, personal observations, and Internet research of two sex tourism sites and four related blog posts. Responses of women sex workers are compared to global information provided by other research. It is argued that poor women involved in sex tourism in the Dominican Republic most often reluctantly choose sex work in order to provide the necessities for themselves and their families.
